How to plan your next camping trip

Before you start planning your next camping trip, you must consider a few things first. There are a few questions to ask yourself so that the answers can help guide you in planning your trip. The main thing to consider is what kind of traveler and camper you are. Do you like to travel lightly or do you tend to over pack? Do you like roughing it, or do you prefer more amenities such as electricity and water? Are you traveling solo or with a group? Are you bringing kids or pets? Will you be driving or hiking to your campsite? Do you need a four wheel drive vehicle to get there? There are so many logistics that go into planning any trip, especially if it is for multiple days. If you find yourself getting overwhelmed during the planning process, contact your local outfitters for assistance. They can help you navigate the following:

Campsite

Finding the ideal campground can be a challenge as there are so many to choose from. However, if you have answered the questions above, your outfitter should be able to take that information and narrow down your options to places that would work the best for your needs. The outfitter will also help you with any reservations, permits and payments. If they are really knowledgeable about the area's campgrounds, an outfitter can tell you which campsites are the most desirable depending on what your preferences are. Do you need more privacy? Would you like to have a nice view? All of these things will be taken into consideration when planning your camping trip.

Meals

It takes a bit more planning when it comes to meal time as you are not typically equipped with the same amenities that you have in your home. You will need to come up with some one-pot-wonder meals that can be cooked in one pan over a stove or open flame. You should plan to cook up to two meals per day, for breakfast and dinner. Then, for lunch, plan for small easy meals that you can make and take on the go, such as sandwiches and snacks.

Gear

Sometimes packing can get out of hand as many inexperienced campers will take a lot of items that will probably not use anyway. This can bog down backpacks and coolers while cluttering up tents and campsites. The main items you will need are light breathable clothing and outerwear that can be layered as the climate changes, comfortable and sturdy shoes, a cooler, food, cooking equipment and utensils, a tent, sleeping bag and flashlight.

Safety

Other important items you will need to bring are for safety precaution, such as a first aid kit, compass, knife and matches. Before your camping trip, make sure to discuss with your outfitter any other safety measures you should take.

Weather

Make sure that you are prepared for inclement weather. You should also check with your outfitter to see if there are any fire bans in the area or other warnings you should be aware of.
